1992 Crown Vic

Description and Operation of the
Ford Crown Victoria Air Suspension

This automobile has standard struts and coil springs in the front and the rear is an air operated, microprocessor controlled air suspension system where most have steel coil springs. The Crown Victoria air suspension system allows low spring rates for improved ride and automatic rear load leveling.

The two air springs support the load at the rear wheels of the Crown Victoria. Air suspension is used to keep the rear level at all times. The air springs are mounted on the axle spring seats and to the frame upper spring seats.

The system is operational when the ignition is in the RUN position and is limited to one hour after the ignition has been turned to the OFF position. The Crown Victoria air suspension switch, located in the trunk must be turned to OFF position when the vehicle is on a hoist, being towed or jump started.

The "Check Air Suspension" warning lamp is located in the instrument panel message center, to the right of the speedometer. The warning lamp flashes five times and then stays on when the service air suspension switch is turned to the OFF position or there is any malfunction in the Ford Crown Victoria air suspension system.

The rear air suspension leveling system operates by adding or removing air in the air springs to maintain the level of the vehicle at a predetermined rear air suspension "D" ride height dimension and is controlled by a microcomputer module located either in the trunk or behind the glove box in the Crown Victoria.
