Solutions for the 1988 -1994 Lincoln Continental Suspension Problems
To replace the complete Lincoln Continental Air Suspension System at the
local dealer is about $3500 for four air struts and a compressor. Any
electronic parts will be added to this.
If you have recently replaced part of the air system such as two air struts
and a compressor, then replacing the other two make good sense.
If you are facing the first failure, you are at a point where you can eliminate
a continuing problem rid with expenses and down time, by installing the Lincoln
Continental Non Air Suspension Conversion Kit. The four wheel kit replaces
the entire system with a Life-Time warranty. Two wheel kits are available
and replacing the front or rear kit only gets you started in the right direction
and you may last a while longer on the other air struts. Directions
are given to continue with the part air ride/part conversion.
If your Lincoln Continental air suspension system is pumped up firm and
high, then the solenoid is bad in the compressor. The solenoid opens
to vent air from the system. When it fails, the compressor continues
to pump air in but can't release it, causing the car to stay high. Replacing
the compressor will correct this problem.
A simple test to determine if the air struts are leaking: With the car
up, turn the switch OFF in the trunk. If the car goes down in several
hours, the air struts leak. When the switch is turned OFF, the solenoids
are closed at each air strut. The compressor won't run to pump up the
leaks, so if the air strut doesn't leak, the car will remain up. One
side leaking will send the other side down. Usually the side that goes
down first is the leaking air strut.
Remember, that even when all new air struts are installed along with a
new compressor, you are facing a possible electronic failure as the car ages.
Anyone who has the skill to install brake pads and shocks, etc. can install
the kit. Mechanics usually charge about one hour per wheel.
